Review Of Star Wars

0

First thing’s first: anybody concerned that this new series is going to disrupt any established Expanded Universe or movie continuity need not worry. Star Wars #1 makes it abundantly clear that Dark Horse has every intention of respecting the movie canon and merely circumventing the EU – while there are references to EU events, Star Wars #1 is simply not beholden to it. And it’s this avoidance of EU continuity and its utter embrace of the post-A New Hope mystery and anticipation that makes Star Wars #1 such a resounding joy to experience.
Set two months after the Battle of Yavin, Star Wars #1 finds Leia, Luke, and Wedge (finally, Wedge will get his due!) searching the Outer Rim for a new Rebel base. Writer Brian Wood takes a very political approach to the troubles of the Rebellion; they are struggling not only with resources – economical, physical, and emotional – but also in finding planets that are willing to join their cause. Though the destruction of the Death Star was a great victory for the Rebels, it had already done its job in displaying the true power and reach of the Empire to non-compliant star systems. Star Wars #1 sucks away a bit of the optimism that A New Hope ends with, but in that way, it’s already bridging the gap nicely between Episodes IV and V.
Wood seems to have latched onto Leia as the focal point of the tale, positioning her as the symbol of the Rebel Alliance and as the character we spend the most time with. Surely this will develop as the series goes on, but issue #1 is very much Leia’s show. Wood turns the headstrong Leia up to 11, positioning her as an astute X-Wing pilot and even someone Mon Mothma turns to for advice. Leia’s integrity was never really challenged in the movies (save for the Slave Leia incident, but even then she chokes out Jabba something fierce), but even from issue #1, it’s clear that Wood is intent on positioning Leia as the power player.
And though his pages are few, Darth Vader also gets a surprising amount of introspection as he has to suffer the wrath of the Emperor for failing at Yavin and deal with the embarrassment of essentially being demoted. Star Wars #1 does suffer a bit from too much techno-babble, particularly during the dogfight sequences. While this is something that is carried over from the movie, on the page it really only works to cover up some of the great visuals by Carlos D’Anda.
D’Anda packs Star Wars #1 with some incredible work, particularly during the action sequences. The opening dogfight and subsequent ground battle pack a real punch, and D’Anda’s attention to detail – particularly where vehicles and the design elements of the Star Wars Universe are concerned – is responsible for the success of these scenes. Take for instance the Vader sequence – D’Anda’s ever-so-subtle visual tweaks in Vader’s armor, as well as the way he frames him in-panel, helps to sell Vader’s emotions despite his outward appearance being more or less static. His basic character work is strong, too (but don’t expect actor likenesses), though a little less refined than what we saw in his work in 2011’s Batman: Arkham City comic book prequel.
Joey is IGN's Comics Editor and a comic book creator. Follow Joey on Twitter @JoeyEsposito, or find him on IGN at Joey-IGN. He will love Star Wars until he becomes one with the Force, and then he will continue loving it as a blue ghost.

Review Of Wow Crusher

Review Of Wow CrusherWorld of Warcraft is a land of elites. It’s just the way it is. The game has been online for the last six years and some players have been playing the whole time, pretty much destroying anyone in their path to become the best around. So, it’s no surprise that people look for new guides all the time to help them get better and bump up to par with the top pros out there. Luckily, every now and then a guide actually comes along that can help you do that – becoming a top player in a land of elites. This time around, that new guide is WoW Crusher.

To be honest, WoW Crusher isn’t a single guide. It’s a ton of guides, with a new one added to the mix every month. I reviewed the first couple of months for this review and they were top notch content. Each guide was 30 pages long and included three features, top news from the month, questions from readers, an action plan and a preview of the next month. Each feature was full of useful content that was designed to do just about anything you needed it to – from building up a powerful play through strategy for a Death Knight to creating a 10 man raiding group. It’s not hyper specific information, but it’s a heck of a lot more than the general strategies you get from the existing guides on the market.
Review Of Wow Crusher

To top things off, you get a whole bunch of extras with the guide. The first extra was the Fast Track Action Plan that Markco and Kevin provide. It’s a guideline that helps players figure out how to put together a good WoW account. Basically, it includes everything from an outline of how to build a character, choose your UI and the right class and professions to how to get into a guild, start up PvP and go about raiding. Essentially, it’s a route to stop making so many silly mistakes as you play through the game – a great tool for beginners and something even a few veterans could probably benefit from.

In the end, WoW Crusher is a great new product that provides something I’ve never seen before in a WoW product. It is updated every month with a new ebook and all for a decent monthly fee with information about pretty much every aspect of the game not just a couple of select areas.

Review of Warcraft

review of warcraftMMOs are a strange beast. They are designed to make you play as much as possible, yet addictiveness does not always equal fun. In the field of pyschology, there are several kinds of rewards systems, and the one that seems to be the most successful is the random reward introduced at a random time. Sometimes you click the button, and nothing happens. Sometimes you click and get the food pellet. It's this mechanism that fuels the slots in Vegas, and when you walk away empty, as is statistically inevitable over a long enough stretch of time, you tell yourself that the overall value was the experience itself, since you come away with nothing tangible. MMOs take away your time and they never deliver a discreet conclusion.

I played a ton of Dark Age of Camelot shortly after it launched, and I find myself reminded of it negatively every day that I play World of Warcraft. To discuss the differences in favor of WoW would be an article in itself, but I'll try to keep to the main points.

review of warcraftFirst, let's talk about The Grind. In a traditional persistent online RPG, you advance your character by killing an endless string of monsters, and by doing "FedEx" quests where you get some money and/or experience points by delivering an arbitrary item from Point A to Point B. As your character advances, his or her progress begins to slow. It takes longer and longer to get to the next level, because you need more and more experience points each time, yet the experience returned from monsters and deliveries does not scale accordingly. Yet you feel compelled to continue because at Level X you get a really cool spell or other ability that's supposed to make the game more "fun."

review of warcraftThe second part of the grind is "downtime," the amount of time it takes to recover from each monster (or "mob") encounter. When I played DAOC, it typically took every ounce of my resources to defeat an enemy that would give me respectable experience. Then I would sit down and wait while my energy bars slowly refilled. Then you'd have to wait awhile for the next batch of monsters to spawn again, and you'd typically be competing against other players and "camping" this same spot all day long.

review of warcraftNow, imagine an MMO where your experience is a string of quests where you're rewarded with a cool item, recipe, or a decent amount of pocket money. A game where the grind is virtually eliminated--a game where downtime is relatively nonexistent, where enemies respawn rapidly and dynamically according to how many players are in the local area; where you can use a healing spell, or bandage yourself, or eat some food, or all three, before diving right back in again. Your character's death doesn't result in the loss of many hours of experience points, or one of your items, or any money (although there is item decay, so whatever you have equipped currently takes a 10% durability hit). When you die, you resurrect as a ghost who moves quickly, runs on water, and cannot be harmed on its way back to its body. You can also have a player resurrect you in a matter of moments, even after you have entered ghost form. This is a game that understands Fun.
